A Classroom Activity Package: A Tribute to the Mighty Sparrow

This activity pack celebrates the life and music of Dr. Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow, the Calypso King of the World. It uses calypso to build reading, writing, mathematics and critical thinking skills. It suits Black History Month, Carnival season and any lesson on Caribbean culture.

What’s inside:

• Number Mission: three levels of maths challenges using squares, order of operations, fractions and decimals. Each answer unlocks a digit that reveals a fact about Sparrow’s life.
• Cipher Mission: a decoding challenge where students shift letters back by three to uncover a hidden phrase.
• Turn It Up!: six word problems, each with a one-digit answer. Students match the answers to a letter key to solve the riddle.
• Kennedy and Kruschev: a reading and critical thinking page on the Cold War calypso, with five discussion questions and a space to think and draw. A colour and a black and white version are included.
