Objective: Students will identify, read, and represent words containing the [sound] r-controlled vowel pattern through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities.

[SOUND] is one of the “bossy R” patterns that trips up early readers, since the R changes the vowel sound instead of following the usual short/long vowel rules. This resource makes the pattern memorable through two connected pieces:

The [SOUND] Words Chart presents ten common words containing the sound, with the vowel team highlighted in color and paired with a bright illustration — displayed inside giant bubble letters so the pattern itself becomes the visual anchor. A “Say it… hear the [sound] sound!” callout reinforces the auditory connection every time a child looks at the page.

The chart is paired with an Art Choice Board — a two-page activity where a child picks one word from the chart, then chooses how to represent it from nine creative options spanning different learning styles: drawing, play-dough sculpting, collage, recording a rhyme, clapping out the sounds, writing a silly sentence, acting it out, a nature hunt, or word detective work finding related sounds. A simple reflection box lets them record their word and confirm they heard the target sound.

Together, these two pages move a child from recognizing the pattern, to reading it, to applying it creatively — appealing to visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and logical learners alike.
